Sparky's Root Beer (Knox Brewing, Pacific Grove)

Those of you who know that Pacific Grove was the last "dry" municipality in California (until 1969) may find it ironic that there's now a brewery in town. But fear not, Knox Brewing only makes root beer. Great root beer!

Softly carbonated, poured straight into a glass, there's hardly any head at all. The flavor is deep and dark, medium sweet, and is so intense it numbed my tongue. For me, it was too powerful to drink straight, and I considered adding a couple cubes of ice. Instead I made a float with a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream. The fine-grained creamy mousse was a thing of beauty and the flavors softened and rounded out in the mix.

This is wonderful stuff. Now I don't have to miss home-brewed root beer any more.

I purchased this bottle at Star Market in Salinas. The website lists other retail outlets in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.
