What are your favorite Southern supermarkets? Here are my top 5:
5: Piggly Wiggly- That Southern icon is still around, with plenty of locally & regionally produced foods available inside. My experience is with the Carolina franchise based out of Charleston. Decent meat & fish, good produce.
4: Winn-Dixie- This Jacksonville-based grocer is still the home of "The Beef People". Best meat case. Store brands leave a lot to be desired. Good selection of regional sauces.
3: Bi-Lo- The high end of chic cheap, I can always count on finding something interesting inside.
2: Harris Teeter- The venerable upscale grocer makes shopping pleasant & comfortable, but not a pleasure.....that honor belongs to:
1: Publix- I have yet to find a large chain grocer that carries as much quality items for a reasonable price as does Publix. Definately the most sought after chain when people travel to Florida!
What are your favorites? Try & keep them as Southern as you can (Kroger, for example, while it does cover a lot of the South, is based in Ohio, which is not in the South).
