Just returned from a 2 day business trip to S. Beach.
Took clients to three "hot restaurants": Mark's S. Beach, Yucca and Wish.
Mark's - The best meal we had there. Very nice staff all around, huge menu (this concerned me at first - too many items often means not great food), pretty, chic restaurant. So many things to choose from, they all sounded great. I picked the quail app. and the halibut main course, both were excellent. desserts were decent, not exceptional. Everyone loved what they had - a major hit. Very nice wine list.
Yucca- had eaten here a year ago for dinner and it was decent - tried it again because its sort of Cuban (no time to go to Versailles this trip). We went there for a quick lunch. The place was deserted (2 other tables taken). The maitre'd first made us wait 5 minutes before talking to us (he ignored us while chatting on the phone). Seating us was like him doing us the greatest favor ever, and when we informed him that we were in a bit of a hurry, instead of telling us that the (certainly un-busy) kitchen would accomodate us, or maybe even recommend which dishes were quicker to prepare, he simply said that everything on the menu was "made to order" and that nothing was quick. Against my better judgement, we stayed. The food (which miraculously arrived fairly quickly), was terrible. Two people got salads (Yucca salad and a latin caesar) - neither wanted to finish because they had no taste and I got a cuban-ish sandwich which tasted like it was made with stale, freezer burned bread. Yech!
Wish- Very trendy, we ate outside which was quite nice on that beautiful evening. This meal took forever, we were there for three hours! Service and staff were quite nice, but it was just a real s l o w place. Food was good but not exceptional. Started with the pnko coated oysters, which somehow could have used more flavor (or less panko so you tasted the oysters?) and the sea bass, which was good. Desserts was OK.
