Prior to meeting some friends last night at Tang Pavillion (on W. 55th St.), I did a little "Chowhound research" on the place, and found some raves (mostly from Jim Leff) about their soup dumplings. Well, no offense, but they weren't even in the same LEAGUE as the dumplings I had just two nights previously (Saturday) at New Green Bo. First of all, inside the "soup" dumplings, there was almost no soup! And as for comments about the dumpling dough being somehow superior, well, it actually seemed overly dough-y compared to the nice, thin wrappers at New Green Bo.
In fact, I found the overall cooking at Tang to be pretty mediocre, with many dishes (including the recommended crispy eel, a "whole crispy fish" and several shrimp dishes) to be coated with sauces and/or flavorings that were far too sweet. Believe it or not, one of the cleanest, best-tasting things I had there was a delicious won-ton soup ordered by one of my co-diners.
In short: I'll stick with Chinatown.
