My husband are heading to Oahu for a quick 5 night trip on May 4th. We moved from Honolulu 13!!! years ago & haven't been back (discovered the Carribean). This board has many great recommendations for "new" places, and several that bring back wonderful memories (hot malasadas, manapua, Rainbow Drive-In, etc.). It seems that Alan Wong's will be a good choice for a "big night out."
We'll be staying at the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel. How is their restaurant, the Hau Tree Lanai?
The one place that would be a kick to return to, if it still exists, is Soon's. It was a Korean BBQ/drive-in. If memory serves it was near the Aloha Stadium or Pearl Harbor. We used to PIG OUT on their kalbi & meat jun (sp?). The other "special" place is the Rose & Crown Pub in Waikiki (we met there).
We also liked Keo's, the Mexican place next to the No Name Bar in Kailua, Auntie Pastas, any fund-raising Huli-Huli chicken BBQ, KC waffle dogs, loco-moco, the bar Key Largo when we lived in Waikiki (what a DIVE!), the lunch wagon by the Honolulu Medical Group (lau lau on Fridays), some of the food court joints at the Ala Moana Ctr, Zip-Paks, nursing a hangover at Perry's Smorgy on Kailua (outside), saimin at the place on the road running mauka from the back of Ala Moana Ctr (Keeaumoku?), green mango with shoyu, lumpia dipped in vinegar, and so many more. I'm sure everyone would be grateful if I stopped.
All suggestions and info are much appreciated.
