It's always Kopps, Kopps, Kopps on this board. Their custard is great, and their burger is ok, too. But right down the street from Kopps (that would be a few miles south on Pt. Washington rd.) is Solly's, an old fashioned burger joint which I tried for the first time recently despite living very close by for 4 years. Anyway, clearly Solly's isn't suffering much despite its absence from this board. The place was packed at 2 pm. It has a long, winding lunch counter and also a takeout area.
The burgers are smaller than Kopps, with a thinner patty that appeard to have been flattened on the griddle because the edges were rough and crisped. I never liked the thickness of the kopps patty because I do not like well done beef, yet a rare fast food burger is disgustung. Also, the kopps burger is just too big for me, an average sized woman who loves food, to enjoy.
So anyway, the Solly's burger with everything has sauteed diced onions, ketchup, mustard, pickle, and american cheese all gooily melded with the onion. The bun is soft yet substantial enough to soak up the copious amount of butter and hold together as you eat. And the fries while nothing special, were at least crisp, salty, and better than those limp things you get at Kopps.
Now, I am still a big fan of Kopps custard and also the fact that you can get a burger there til at least 11 pm. But next time someone comes from afar to have the famous custard, have the Solly's burger first. If nothing else, you will have more room to enjoy dessert
