after a year of talking about it and reading many detailed descriptions, a friend and i finally went to hiro for the special sunday soba menu. a warm summer day like today was the perfect time to enjoy the cool, refreshing flavours of soba noodles. every sunday, the restaurant is taken over by soba mavens so there's absolutely nothing but soba served this day. you can read an amazing description of the meticulous preparation of the noodles on this blog:
the menu offers about 6 different ways to enjoy the soba (starting at $13 for just soba and tsuyu, the dipping broth). we both decided on having the okonomi soba ($20, the most expensive), which allows you to try the soba three ways. the toppings i had were snow crab, grated yam, and tofu (i learned from the menu that it's as carefully prepared from scratch as the soba). each was served in their own bowl with soba and tsuyu. i have not eaten soba often, but it was immediately clear these noodles were special. the buckwheat flavour was very pronounced and it was obvious that the noodles were the focus, and not just the carrier for other flavours. and the texture of each strand was unmistakably the result of the handcut preparation and preserved by the careful cooking. and each topping provided a nice contast to the al dente noodles: the tofu was unbelievably creamy; the snow crab leg meat was delectably sweet; and the yam was incredibly lush and viscous. and the tsuyu tied everything together with its gentle balance of salt, sweet, and savoury.
everything lived up to our high expectations. soba sunday is definitely a welcome change from the usual bacon and eggs brunch scene.
