Thanks to a recommendation here, we tried Smitty's in Culver City over the weekend. (It's right where Culver and Venice intersect on the south side of Venice.)
Family of four, we ordered a bunch of stuff so we could try different things.
Tried two different types of fish. They have maybe four or five. The sole was really good, light with good flavor. The snapper wasn't as good. I would stick with the sole.
The fried chicken was good. Not as good as Uncle Darrow's (which is where we usually get southern fried chicken), but good. I would order it again. Maybe there was too much breading/batter, so some bites were all crunch, no chicken. But good eating.
One of the best things is that none of the fried food was greasy at all.
We also ordered the hot wings. This was my favorite thing on the menu. They weren't as hot as other wings -- I'm way above average on heat tolerance, though I know there are people who can eat things that put me to shame and make me seem weak -- and these weren't sizzing. But they tasted so good. I don't recall if there were choices when it came to hotness. (For what it's worth, anyone can use so many hot peppers that hot food gets really hot, the trick is good flavor with the heat.) The wings were meaty and I ate almost the whole platter, leaving the other things for my family.
The collard greens were really good. Everything comes with fries, but you can sub other sides. So we had fries (okay fries, not write on chowhound and have an orgasm fries), the potato salad was okay, didn't try the mac and cheese.
It's a good place if you're in the mood. I could go back for an order of wings and some collards and be very, very happy with my lunch or dinner.
