Got some takeout at Zoe's (Beacon St, Somerville) last night. I had been consulting an evidently old menu online (at campusfood.com) and couldn't find the tofu & preserved egg on the menu. I asked the guy taking orders but he said they never made anything like that. Turns out his English was just bad, as I later found it on the dine-in menu, on the "cold dishes" page. It's just not on the take-out menu.
Anyhow, we tried the following:
* Steamed dumplings in red oil: I was really wanting to enjoy these, but they just weren't that good. The dough was too thick and dense, and the filling wasn't very juicy. Perhaps I got an old batch.
* Double-cooked pork: I was expecting fatty cubes of belly, but instead this was some kind of lean, thinly-sliced stuff. Delicious but dry and chewy. There were some green peppers in this one.
* Tripe with cilantro: This was excellent, with juicy, tender tripe that had no unpleasant flavor. The ample chopped cilantro stems were quite savory and subtle in flavor... kind of like watercress. The sauce was very light.
* Ma po tofu: Aside from being a little too salty, this was great. Nice use of spicing that wasn't too aggressive (if you want it super-hot, ask). Also, they are very generous with the tofu and meat. The container was mostly solids and not too much oil/sauce.
This was about $30. All in all, a very satisfying takeout experience, and I'll be back soon. I didn't see the lotus/pork on the menu, but I'll try to order it.
