Reading recent posts, there seemed to be some Australian Chowhounds living in the Bay Area, so they might be interested in Kumars, which in addition to selling the New Zealand style white sausage, has a number of groceries from Australia as well.
The tiny Kumars Island Market is not limited to the islands of Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Hawaii. They also have products for the tropical paradise of Poland. They sell Stephans Kielbasa made in San Jose.
I have to assume that Australians or New Zealanders like canned corned beef as there were four different brands in cans that ranged from small to huge. I think one brand was Tuckers. There was canned Camp pie and canned mutton.
A sign on the window advertises Puerto Rican Pasteles. As you walk in the door there is Hawaiian sweet bread from a local San Jose bakery.
You can find fresh taro leaves. Canned items that I noticed were jackfruit, breadfruit, passion fruit, and huge cans of coconut milk.
Other sausages advertised include Filipino longanisa, Italian sausage, hot links, and Hawaiian Linguisa (not sure what that means. Maybe it is a brand made in Hawaii). There is frozen diced goat meat from New Zealand.
There is an impressive selection of shell necklaces. There are also tropical shirts. There are CDs and Videos from the islands mentioned.
The interior reminded me of tiny stores that you find in the back roads of Hawaii. The wooden shelves are packed with all sorts of canned goods and groceries. Many meats are frozen, I think. There seems to be a meat locker in the back. You place your order and they retrieve the meat.
They were out of the Polish sausage. It seemed someone just bought 50 lbs that morning. I was told this Stephans Kielbasa is sold at San Jose Home Depots.
I took a quick look at the market and am not even touching on the selection and unique items. If you are looking for goods from any of the islands mentioned, Kumars might be a place to check out.
