A friend and I had dinner at this new place on Mott St. south of Bayard tonight. We shared roti canai, sambal sotong, and curry beef noodles. The food was authentic - spicy and delicious. My friend suffered some aftereffects from eating "too spicy, too fast, and too much." The food is not for people on low-fat or low-salt diets, but it is the real stuff. It was one of the best Malaysian/Singaporean meals I've had in New York, as good or better than any. Also, an older man who seemed to be a proprietor sort asked me how the food was. I spoke with him a little bit. One of the questions I asked him is whether they make Singapore-style laksa (which is not listed in the menu), not only asam laksa (which is). He answered in the affirmative. The clientele was almost totally Chinese, and the decor is sort of funky and stylish. Cost for the meal: $22, including a good tip. I recommend the place very highly.
