We met some friends at Shin Goong Jun last night. First the bad news. The pajun pancake was only so-so. Could it be part of the reheated pancake epidemic noted on the other boards?
However, this was forgivable, since the barbeque was some of the best I have had in years. We had the kalbi, which was very good meat, and it was cooked on hardwood coals! (The ventilation in the restaurant was excellent, though.) It was succulent, lightly smoky, and had a very clean flavor. The banchan were also excellent. There weren't any of the more luxorious things, like oysters in chili paste or raw marinated crab. However, there was an extremely large selection of very high quality dishes -- tofu slices in chili paste, two kinds of seaweed, several excellent kimchis, radishes, fried little fish, baked egg custard with sesame and scallion.
This place has been posted about before, and is definitely worth a return trip. I am even willing to give the pancakes another chance.
Shin Goong Jun is at 329 Bergen Blvd in Palisades Park, NJ, (201) 346-0201. It was about 15 minutes from the UWS, quicker than going to either Queens or Midtown. Intruigingly, a few blocks north is a place called "Nutrition Tofu" that I can't wait to try.
