We've tried takeout Chinese from Shang Hai on Whalley Ave. (across from Edge of the Woods) are few times during the past several months, and we think it's the best place of its kind around our neighborhood. Our favorite Chinese around New Haven remains Royal Palace in Orange, but for typical American-style delivery or takeout, Shang Hai is consistently pretty good.
Our favorite dishes are the house special fried rice, which comes with bits of pork, tiny shrimp and white meat chicken. It's fresh-tasting and moist, with slightly-crisp vegetables.
We also like the boneless spareribs, which come in a not-too-sweet orange sauce. They're a little fatty, but we like that. The egg rolls and spring rolls are crisp with light fillings - not all all greasy. The moo shu is another favorite - a nice blend of cabbage and other veg with pork in a light sauce. My only complaint is the pancakes are on the dry side.
We have had mixed luck with some other dishes - the tangerine beef was very good one time but heavy and way too sweet another time. And they're too heavy with the sauces on the stir-fried broccoli.
The restaurant is clean and open so you can see the kitchen. The place is nothing much to look at. There are a few tables if you want to eat in. The staff is courteous and prompt. Orders over $20 come with soda if you want it.
I'm curious if other people have tried this place and what you think - what did you get? Has it been consistent?
