shady glen restaurant

I went to the Shady Glen Restaurant in Manchester, Conn., (the original, free-standing building, not the second, in the shopping center) as recommened by Jane and Michael Stern ("Road Food," et al) and had the crispy cheese cheeseburgers they raved about, and I think they were worth the trip. Not only was the burger platter also have lots of (good) fries and very good homemade coleslaw, the condiments came in one of those old-fashioned metalic holders, with ketchup, mustard, chopped onions and relish. Water was served in a Shady Glen dixie cup, the staff wore old-fashioned sweetshop hats and the ice cream, including mincemeat and grape nut, was homemade. It was really a throwback to 1948, when it first openned.
