Had a great weekend in the city. Started Fri. night
at Shalimar. The lamb gosht in butter sauce was authentic, lamb on bone, good if not hot seasoning but there were more tough pieces of lamb than not.About the same for the lamb saag gosht. The dal was mediocre. The naan was good when it was fresh but the first batch we got had obviously been sitting. These flaws were not because it was busy, we went early so we could shop after. To stray for just a minute, there is great Indian food in the valley, Roseville, a place called Jimmys.
R&G Lounge was just o.k. for lunch. The BBQ beef lunch plate was tastey and my husband liked his salted fish with rice but the chefs special noodles, weren't. They were slightly mushy and bland.
At Stella bakery, North Beach, there is a cake like dessert called Sacrapantina (sp) that could float off the plate right into your mouth and transport you straight into heaven.
Dinner at Antica Tratorria was very good. For apps. the hits, golden beets with arugula and goat cheese and toasted pine nuts, nice combination and textures. There was this potato cake stuffed with gorgonzola that was also good. My husband had dried beef with fuji apples that I didn't think was that special but he liked it. The Venison special was slightly gamey and the steak (?)with balsamic was cooked perfectly for my daughter.
But the real hit was my pappardelle with wild boar sauce. The pasta was perfect al dente, the sauce was not gamey at all, reduced and rich. The deserts were all passed around all of them wonderful, flourless chocolate cake dense and decadent, bread pudding with dried apricots, currants and vanilla bean ice cream outstanding, and vanilla ice cream with espresso and amaretto was also creamy and rich. Sorry this is brief but I am pressed for time.
