SF Chowhound In NYC for 1st time, need help for Dec. (long)

Hi,

My BF and I will be in NYC for the very 1st time and will only be there for one day (sigh) for some post-Xmas shopping. Will be driving in from DC with my sis who is also a gourmand. We need recs for dinner and lunch.

Not sure where we'll be staying at but would like to hear your recs now so I can make reservations. Would love to go to Per Se (love the French Laundry) but I don't think we'll have time for 3-4 hr meals and I don't want to settle for just eating 3 courses there. Any suggestions? Have heard a lot of good things about Fleur de Sel so it's only my list. Coming from the SF Bay Area, we're already fully immersed in great ethnic cuisine so I'm not looking for Indian, Chinese, Thai, etc. unless maybe it's fusion. Oh, and I'm not into Italian either. Ate too much of it during the 90's. It's dead to me.

Looking for the total NY experience with great food, professional service and spectacular view/ambience but not super formal (i.e. no tie required). Our budget (not strict) is about $100/pp for dinner and $50/pp for lunch inc. taxes and tips. Please help and point me to previous threads on the places you've mentioned if possible.

Thanks!
