this morning , i felt adventurous and a sudden urge for a long walk and - of course - some delicious breakfast ... of the Chinese kind
in the past , i have heard from my neighbors in my 'hood - and heard from some posters on this board - how one could get a really cheap yet mouth watering and delicious breakfast in a place called Chinatown in the city ... the problem is - this place is a very long walk from where i live which is along the mid Jones street corridor
i haven't been to that part of town in ages and my newly acquired chow instinct was telling me ... take a long hike to Chinatown and go lose yourself in some holeinthewall kinda joint for a cheap breakfast - a cHoWhOuNd adventure of sorts - as newbie as you are !
i said to myself : why the heck not !
to make a long story short , i had a wonderful bowl of congee (jook?) for - get this - seventy-five cents ! i kid you not - 75cents! the portion was BIG! and it was delicious ! mouth watering delicious. some kind of strange looking dark looking preserved eggs and some salted pork were kinda staring at me from inside the jook which was steaming hot as for temperature goes . i also ordered some dim sum for 3 for $1.10. i think it was called "fun guall" which was steamed (not fried) and had taro root meshed together with (i believe it was) parsley (delicious!) like meshed potato except it was not potato ... i asked for a cup for hot water and the lady said 25cents! i handed her my last quarter. everything i had there was delicious! as i was sitting by the table right smack next to the display counter , i was watching intensely how the 'cooks' were carrying the just cooked dim dum from the kitchen 'fresh off the steamer" and putting them on display while other patrons were eagerly awaiting for their food orders to take home to feed their hungry kids (i'm guessing here mind you)
Thanks gals and guys for all the good suggestions !
oh BTW , i went early in the morning - around 7am - where i normally do my morning walk up and down Jones street but today i walked a lot further ... over the hill , then down yet another hill , ending over in the heart of Chinatown for my chow breakfast... i think i'll go there more : CHEAP and DELICIOUS breakfast and if i go early enough NO WAIT IN LINE!
oh yes , after the 'jook' breakfast , i was still kinda hungry . remembering some other chowhound posts about moon cake sightings in dick lee , i walked down jackson to dick lee and bought a box of four moon cakes (double egg white lotus?) for $10 . i immediately scooped one out of the box and ate the whole thing ... sort of like a morning dessert . y-U-m-M-y !
sorry for the long post. being still a chowhound newbie , i don't know what the average post length is . i'll try to shorten it in the future
