I tried this place on March 6 after reading all the positive reports about how great the food was here. They claim to have Toronto's best schnitzel. I was very disappointed.
I was there around 3 or 4 pm, with 4 other customers present. The young woman server on duty was bored, shuffled around and provided mediocre service. The schnitzel would rank as barely average: it is made who knows how long in advance and is nuked when you order it. it is impossible for schnitzel to be crispy and good unless it is freshly made. Ditto with the mashed potatoes and the other sides, made far in advance and nuked.
The server could not even manage to get the food hot enough using the microwave. I had to take my goulash soup back, and ask her to nuke it for another 60 seconds. When I told her it was barely lukewarm and it needed to be reheated, she asked "Are you sure?" I've had far better goulash soup at Country Style on Bloor West. Some pieces of the beef were tough and inedible, and there were very few of them.
The mashed potatoes were barely lukewarm for both myself and another customer. When the other customer (a regular, apparently) told her the mashed potatoes were cold, the server again said. "Are you sure?" The customer replied pleasantly "In this country, honey, the customer is always right." But I ate the lukewarm potatoes anyway because I feared longer in the microwave would make the schnitzel tough and inedible.
I tried the apple strudel for dessert when I checked that it was house-made, and because commentators said their sweets were great. It was horrible because the cook couldn't be bothered to peel the apples and must have chopped them skin and all in the food processor. The filling was filled with nasty tough small pieces of skin. The server was going to give the strudel to me cold from the refrigerated case. When I asked her to heat it, the microwave made the phyllo pastry soggy and hard to cut with a fork.
I doubt very much I will go back, neither the food nor the service was good, and I was very puzzled by the fact this place is supposed to be a neighbourhood icon, patronized by many for 20 or 30 years. Maybe the owners and staff are all getting tired and bored.
