Traveling through downtown Bozeman, Montana recently on a winter evening, my wife and I had a splendid Chowhound surprise at the old Baxter Hotel on Main Street: an excellent dinner at the Savory Olive.
Heather Hand and Eric Stenberg specialize in natural ingredients from regional suppliers, and their dishes display style, ambition, and great taste. The menu is broad and deep. For us, the meal began with appetizers including country-style terrine, pickles, and artisan cheeses. Then we had perfectly cooked diver scallops and grass-fed bison steak as entrees. These were accompanied by remarkable homemade spaetzle, purple potatoes, sunchokes, and fresh local greens. These dishes were followed by superb gingerbread and creme brulee desserts.
Comfortably casual, good selection of beers and wines, but most of all: meals designed and prepared by a staff who really love good food, and know how to deliver.
