I finally made it to this Brazilian Market. Though it is about as large as a mid-size Mexican Mercado, it is the largest Brazilian market in the Bay Area and the only Brazilian market with a fresh meat counter.
They had some nice-looking coils of house-made Brazilian linguica, Portuguese linguica and Mexican chorizo. There’s also a small cheese selection. Fernandez Sao Jorge Portuguese Cheese was on sale this week.
The liquor selection wasn’t too extensive. There is a frozen food case, produce section, a few rows of groceries, a panaderia case and a small take-out restaurant in the back.
Unfortunately I was there late in the day and the restaurant seemed to be closing up. It didn’t look too exciting and as I was walking out the door, the menu caught my eye.
Well, really … Mexican, Italian pizza and calzone and Brazilian food and snacks.
The Brazilian hot dog ($2) is served with stewed tomatoes and onions.
No cheese bread (only frozen). Snacks were
Coxinhas – Deep-fried dough stuffed with shredded chicken
Pastelao – Deep-fried dough stuffed with ham & cheese or ground beef
Kibe- Deep-fried ground beef and wheat
Some of the Brazilian plates I haven’t seen elsewhere in the Bay Area
- Arroz Carreteiro – rice, beef jerk, tomatoes and onions (Tues & Thurs only)
- Feijoa Tropeiro (NOT Feijoda) – Beans, bacon, onions garlic served with rice and collard greens (Sat & Sun only)
They also have feijoda on the weekend – pork and black bean stew with rice, collard greens and corn flour.
They had Brazilian fried chicken, whatever that would mean, and a few other Brazilian and Mexican plates.
They have burritos, tacos, tortas, fajitas, quesadillas, tostadas and nachos as well. Meats include carne asada, pollo asada, lengua, shrimp, carnitas, fried fish and chicarrones. A chile verde burrito is also available.
Except for the chocolate dessert pizza with strawberries, pizza was pretty standard. Calzones could be stuffed with any of the pizza toppings like the Brazilian linguica.
Has anyone tried any of the Brazilian food here? Mexican? Anything?
