Hello all! I've had great luck finding good food through chowhound for other cities...now I am headed to the SD area in May 2013 and have a few questions about local food.
We will be staying in the La Jolla area, but driving is not really an issue. We have a few day trips planned everywhere from the SD area to the LA area.
I have a few questions...
1. Local fruit. Are there any orchards anywhere around that we could go to find fresh citrus, figs, and any other fruits that will be ready in May? It might sound silly, but being from Canada I've never seen an actual citrus tree so that's one thing I want to do.
2. Related to the above, are there any good farmers markets to check out or vendors specializing in fruit?
3. What about restaurant food...anyone have any suggestions? I like a lot of different kinds of food, especially asian and indian influenced food, and my wife is into seafood, but we like a lot of things, and our 2 kids are relatively adventurous. What would you recommend to someone from out of town? Where is there good mexican food? Good BBQ? Good fusion or California cuisine? Anything else that's interesting? I hope this question isn't too open ended.
4. Stores. We booked a kitchenette suite, so where are your favorite places to go for groceries and produce (other than farmers markets?) I definitely intend to hit up a Trader Joe's since I've heard so much about it. Also planning to hit a few farmers markets, looks like there is one downtown on Sun/Wed and another one closer to La Jolla on Tuesday.
We will be traveling as far as the LA area as well, so any Southern California recommendations will be gladly entertained!
Looking forward to any suggestions anyone might have!
