Samurai Mama was recently opened on Grand Street in Williamsburg, by the owners of Bozu. It's a nice setting, with a large communal table surrounded by several tables, and a bar in back. Great service. The food was OK to good.
We started with tsukemono (pickles), which were fine but not spectacular. Maybe I just don't like pickled tomatoes? Then we had the homemade pork gyoza, which were fantastic. Really pork-y and chive-y, juicy with a skin of perfect thickness. It was also served with a lovely chutney type sauce.
Both my husband and I got the Nikujil Udon, an udon soup with pork belly and scallions. Unfortunately, it wasn't terribly remarkable. The broth was distinctly pork-y and a bit sweet, and the pork belly was pretty average. The noodles were lovely though -- springy and not too firm.
I would return for those wonderful gyoza, but I don't know if I would run back.
