Saketini

Went to a new place in Brentwood on Friday night, a small little restaurant called Saketini. It billed itself as creative Asian cuisine but was anything but.

I should have known something was up, the place was empty on a Friday night at 8:00pm, and even on a holiday weekend, it's unusual. The place is very small, has about 8 tables, but still...

The black cod was sickeningly sweet, and was way over sauced. I've had this dish at Matsuhisa and Beacon, wnd while I don't expect other places to reach their level, this one didn't come anywhere close. The kolbe ribs were okay, albeit fatty, and the ribeye was pretty tasteless.

Although ribeye is not a lean cut, I was floored at the amount of grissle left on the meat. It was also pretty tough, something you don't expect from a ribeye. The wasabi mashed potatoes had a nice zing to them, but were a tad lumpy.

The crab roll was pretty bland and without much flavor either.

The candy apple seabass had a nice taste but the fish itself was not exceptionally fresh.

The glass noodles were lumped together and I needed to use my steak knofe to cut them, otherwise I would have wound up with half the noodles in the plate on my chopsticks.

The salads were borderline slimy.

And then as we were finishing, to top it off, here come the flies, small little gnats hovering above our food before zeroing in and landing on the meat and beginning to feast. No amount of waving got rid of them. It was, if nothing else, an omen to not return -- as if we needed any more reason besides the food.

This was an extremely disappointing. The only saving grace was that it wasn't expensive. thank goodness for small favors, but a heckuva way tro start a holiday weekend.
