we wanted some korean-chinese food so headed out to happy family....only to discover that it was now sahn maru, a korean restaurant, oh well

anyways, we went in and ordered the two soon tofu and kalbi combos, soon tofu and spicy bbq pork combo, and a dol sot bibimbap

in most korean restaurants, the banchan comes out before the meal so that the diners can have something to snack on, but we didn't get the banchan until our entrees arrived, and the banchan portions were tiny, lacked variety and were unmemorable

now for the entrees, the soon tofu soup was not spicy at all and too sweet because the beef used in the stew was marinated bulgogi (this was confirmed by the waitress) which is a big no no and resulted in a sweet tasting soon tofu stew, not only that, the soup just had no depth

on to the kalbi, i guess i should have looked at the pictures on the walls, but its LA style kalbi, and its too sweet

the spicy bbq pork fared no better, no spice and too sweet

i don't know how the dol sot bibimbap was because i didn't care to get an opinion on it

so all in all, it was one of the worst korean meals i've had in recent memory

it's a real shame because as i was looking at the menu, there were some real interesting items on it, korean-country items such as a duck stew and black goat stew listed under the specials, and a few other items that i've only seen in korea, so i really wanted to like this place, but it was just horrible tasting food

perhaps this is the type of place where only the country style dishes would be good, but i really doubt it
