Okay, okay, I confess that I had never made it to Union before. When a friend offered to take me to dinner Monday night, I jumped at the chance. A late dinner - around 9pm - we chose to sit in the bar/lounge. Service from our female bartender was superb.
Worth it to go back for the outstanding service alone, never mind how fab the drinks were (and later, the food). My pear sidecar was delightful.
From the R W menu:
cucumber gazpacho (really was more of a cucumber soup) with spicy rock shrimp, chive oil, mint chiffonade
**this dish was fantastic
Smoked bluefish with grilled peaches, red wine mustard vinaigrette
served w/ spinach salad
**bluefish was a little fishy for me (normally a big fan). I just didn't feel like the dish came together the way the soup did.
grilled hanger steak with roasted vidalia onion salad (over frisee) and blue cheese vinaigrette
**steak cooked perfectly, great flavor, loved the sauce
pan roasted haddock, golden zucchini puree, tomato salad
**big portion, well cooked. the fish was so buttery and the zucchini puree was just wonderful
I'm not a big dessert fan so I'm not the best critic
maple bread pudding was just okay
the ice cream sandwich was cute, but the cookies weren't worth the calories, but the malted vanilla ice cream most certainly was (wonder if they get it from Christina's in Inman)
I thought the RW menu was quite a nice offering, the portions were a value for the price, and service really was outstanding. The space is great too, somehow club-like/loungey yet still feeling bright and open. A good date restaurant.
Will most certainly put Union on my go-to list.
