we are just home from Cinderella Bakery and Cafe, on Balboa, smiling from ear to ear.
Following suggestions from the waitress, we--knowing very little about Russian food, except we were in the mood for something "different"--had...
> eggplant Georgian style (with walnuts [ ! ] and I think cilantro, among other things)
> herring and young potatoes--the herring being, natch, in vinegar with sliced onions, but somehow the vinegar was sweet; very cool. lots of dill on the potatoes (tiny, peeled, steamed)
> mushroom Blinchiki--with sour cream.
nobody call my Internist, please!
> cherry Vareniki, in a thin cherry syrup with, again, sour cream.
did I mention not calling my Internist?
it was all fantastic--bright flavors, nice textures...sun filled room with not-too-much Russian (Georgian?) bric-a-brac and some doinky travel posters on display...nice pace to the table service...enthusiastic waitress, happy to show off what the place could do.
we were the only ones seated in the dining room (why?) but the take-out deli seemed to do steady business...and we're going to join that process ourselves pretty soon...
