run don't walk: VERBENA

I went to Verbena with my mother because I had seen so many postings on this board about it. I had no idea that it was part of the empire that owns Fog City and Betelnut etc. When we arrived it was just before dinner service and I tried to buy hot tea from the bartender. This took a total of 20 minutes. When we wet up to the hostess to be seated she was on the phone and couldn't tell the person on the other end to wait while she seated us so that there were a few couples behind us once she hung up. My mother and I shared an appetizer an entree and a dessert. The appetizer was crab and avocado tostones with a nepales (sp?) salad. This would have been nicer if the avocado had been ripe and the salad was not mostly black beans, (which were not listed on the menu). We had steak as an entree and I am not sure that it would have been enough food even if we had not split it. The dessert was awful. We each took two bites. In my opinion there is no excuse for a horrible warm chocolate cake. There are too many recipes out there for excuses. Any amount of salt would have helped the dessert.
I felt like we had eaten in a mall. The bill was high and the service was awful. My favorite restaurant downtown is still Soizic and once again I would rather support non corporate restaurants.
