Ruen Pair hits the spot

Had a nice dinner at Ruen Pair in Albany tonight. Started with the Lemongrass Salad - ground pork with prawns, lemongrass, shallots, cashews, cilantro, lettuce and garnished with hard boiled egg. The dressing was wonderfully balanced with some heat, acid from lime juice, savory from fish sauce and a bit of sugar. It was our favorite dish. The Issan Sausage was tasty but just a bit dry for my taste - it came with shredded ginger, julienne red onion, cabbage and peanuts. I moistened the sausage with some of the extra dressing from the Lemongrass Salad and it was just what was needed. We also had a rice noodle stir fry with vegetables, basil and chicken.....it was nicely done...smokey with well seasoned chicken. We ordered our food mild - probably the right move for us. I hear that their food is pretty spicy in general. There was a woman across the room who had ordered medium and was paying the price but nevertheless proclaimed that this was the best Thai restaurant in Berkeley/the area! They refilled our Thai Ice tea glasses part way thru dinner without charging extra - nice touch. But even better is the coupon for a free ice tea - in the East Bay Express. (page 38) ruen pair is on 1045 San Pablo Ave. just south of Marin Ave. 510. 528-2375
