Im not a fan of the Rueben which I find usually overstuffed and greasy. I guess Maxs Rueben is everything bad about a Rueben to me
bread overly buttered, too much kraut so the bread gets soggy. I always need something to settle my stomach after eating one.
I had a Rueben I actually liked at Edibles in Point Richmond this week. The owner is German and makes her own sauerkraut with bits of pork. Anyway, the rye was just toasted and not buttered. There was thin layer of spicy mustard on each slice. Corned beef was house made, haufbrau type of corned beef. It wasnt overly krauted so the bread didnt get soggy. Nice layer of melted swiss. It was supposed to have apples in it, but they were MIA.
So where else is there a good Rueben. What do you consider the perfect Rueben?
