Just a quick report of two terrific places we ate at on a recent trip down I-81 through VA and then into Alabama.
First, lunch in Abingdon, VA at The Starving Artist Cafe. Wonderful selection of sandwiches (all named after artists). I had a chicken (a half just-grilled breast) with sprouts, tomatoes, and a great sauce. The breads in the other sandwiches looked interesting -- lots of variety. Cute little cafe too, with art from local artists on the walls.
Made it to the Birmingham, AL area by nightfall -- and we had heard about The Bright Star in Bessemer. Good down-home Southern food. I had fried red snapper throats (never had even seen that before on a menu) -- perfectly fried sweet fish. The small bowl of gumbo beforehand hit the spot -- a chunkier type than I'm used to. Friends had the Greek-style beef, which they also enjoyed.
