Had dinner tonight at Riva in Scituate. Overall we were underwelmed (is that a word???)
App's: we shared 2- fried calamari and stuffed eggplant. Calamari were crispy and not too greasy with lots of garlic and spicy peppers. The traditional sauce was too creamy and lacked depth. Calamari on their own were good but comparable to almost anywhere else. Eggplant was a differnt story. 2 Med slices of pan fried eggplant stuffed with goat cheese and varity of herbs. Cooked perfectly so the crspy exterior was the perfect foil to the creamy center. We all agreed we should have shared 2 of these.
Entrees: I had the veal meatloaf. Thick and very dense with just enough spice to add flavor but not overwhelm the veal. However came out of the kitchen with a warm outside and very cold middle. waitress also forgot the sauce. So cold I chose to send back. return trip was much better. lackluster assorted veggies and boring mashed potato side. Friends had the lobser pasta special. Both agreed that the lobster was overcooked and tough. sauce was flavorful and pasta was al dente but they could get past the rubbery lobster. Another friend had the steak. Cooked perfectly and very tender however she asked to substitute her potato with veggies. very smal portion of same lack luster ones as mine.
Dessert was a flourless chocolate torte (i think) and a bowl of vanilla hazelnut gelato. I didn't have the cake but my friends raved. My few bits of gelato were good but not great.
Serve was spotty but the waitress was pretty pregnant so we can cut her some slack. ;)
Cost with 3 cocktails and 1 med price bottle of wine was $165 w/o tip.
Overall: Not bad but not great. Probably an OK local joint. If you live in the area stop in for a casual meal. Not a special occasion place- no atmosphere- so don't make a special trip.
