I went there Friday night to find they've posted going-out-of-business-everything-must-go signs, also that they're closing nightly at 8 pm until they shut down entirely. Which I think will be very soon -- they've already deleted the store from the website.
The store, part of the mini-chain owned by the family that used to run the Hughes Markets, opened four or five years ago in the NoHo Commons minimall at Lankershim and Chandler across from the Red and Orange Line stations. From the beginning they never seemed to attract much business, even on weekends. The storefront faced a side street, people would drive by on Lankershim and see the signs but not the store and had no idea where to park.
I'll miss the store mainly for its convenience to my daily commute. Like the other stores in the HOW's group (Pasadena, Malibu, Torrance and Granada Hills remain) they served somewhat-above-average prepared food, highlighted by excellent barbecue brisket and ribs that they cooked on an outdoor grill near the entrance.
The area is a poster-child for the bursting of the residential real-estate bubble -- I can't say I'm at all surprised. But I will miss those brisket sandwiches.
