Rio Grande Valley Border Report

My wife & I just returned from the Harlingen area. Had lunch (the house Mexican combo plate) at Garcia's in Matamoros. Way below average, doubt if I'll ever go back. Our old favorite spot, The Drive Inn, was closed. They're putting up a new structure in its place. Drinks at Las Dos Republicas were good, as usual. A strong recommendation goes to La Fogata in Progresso. The beef shishkabob was outstanding, so were the beef fajitas, and the sides were good too. And the cabrito looked good too. We also visited Reynosa to look for a bootmaker. Of the 3 towns, I prefered Progresso; easy to get to, relatively clean, good shopping. Arturo's is also supposed to be good there but we didn't try it. Getting back into the US wasn't too bad but not like it used to be. They check you pretty thoroughly now and the lines and the wait are long on weekends.
