I cannot find the old post -- it was lost perhaps in the legendary Chowhound Message Boards collapse -- but a chowhound in the Sunset Park area hepped me to this Ribena stuff at Hong Kong Supermarket on 8th Ave. and 61st Street. She said it was a black currant syrup popular in Great Britain...
Man, this stuff is the NUTS! Three tablespoons in a glass of ice cold water -- SO refreshing! I tried it, and ventured that it tasted like a very sophisticated raspberry Kool Aid. My boyfriend called it "the fine red wine of all Weyler's drink mixes." But then we both regretted our gross understatements, because this stuff kicks POWDERED drink mix right across the dancefloor, through the parking lot and into a wet ditch.
The chowhound who hepped me -- God Bless Her -- said the English often mix Ribena into tea or lager. I'm celebrating Independence Day with a no-hard-feelings lager and Ribena, and a tip of the hat to GB for inventing something so quenching! And it's >gasp< cheap!
Let me know any other fun uses for this stuff!
Does it make you high? I FEEL high. How do my eyes look to you?
