Review of Tei Tei Robata in Dallas

A few years ago, I ate at Tei Tei Robata and was enthralled by the tapas-style menu that had one tasty dish after another. I just ate there again and found that the place has become enormously popular--so much so that we had to eat at the bar even though we arrived very early. (That was a downside because of the smoking allowed.) Popularity up, food quality down. The crispy duck was fatty and chewy. The dim sum was gummy and cold. The fancy mushrooms were anything but fancy. We had 7 dishes and there was not one I would voluntarily have again. I was very hungry, so I ate my share of everything, so I surely can't call it inedible, but it was disappointing. After the meal, during which I did not discuss my views of the food so as to not disturb the possible pleasures of others, someone else summed it up for me: "That just wasn't as good as I expected from the reputation of this place."
