The last of my B.C. reviews. I have really enjoyed coming out here, not only for the food, but for the fresh air and lack of Toronto attitude. I think maybe you can get blase about all this natural beauty surrounding you, so I suggest a visit to Toronto to help reprioritize your affections. :)
But about the food -- Rebar.
Got there around lunch and the place was packed. My friend and I got a seat and ordered some drinks, an apple juice for him and an "apogee" for me. (carrot, celery, spinach, parsley)
Split an order of their Yukon Gold/sweet potato fries, he got an almond burger, I got the monk's curry. Then we waited.
Service felt slow, but maybe that was just my friend being impatient to go feed the parking meter. Our water glasses were always kept full, so I think the kitchen size and how much product they could get out to the masses there was the limiting factor in the perceived slowness. I didn't mind so much, it was my friend wanting to go get his car away before the meter ran out that caused a bit of service anxiety at the table.
The food when it did come was very good. The potatoes were actually large wedges of soft oiliness with a choice of a sage-lime aoili and a kind of chipotle-ketchup mixture. It was very tasty, ,not too oily, and the sauces were both wonderful.
He enjoyed his almond burger (and he is nowhere near a vegetarian), while I found my curry bland at the start but then as the sauce on the bottom got mixed in more, it became very tasty with a slow-burning heat building up as I kept eating the vegetables, tofu, and rice noodles.
All in all, a great meal and experience. Next time I would reserve, but would definitely go at least twice a month here if I was in the area. It's hard to find a place that does tasty vegetarian cuisine, but this place succeeds quite nicely at it.
And now back to Toronto and reality. Ah well. There's always next summer for new B.C. experiences.
