Six friends met on Saturday night for dinner at the old Bobby McGee's on 1-17 and Dunlap. It is now a BBQ restaurant called Bobby-Q. Seth Chadwick and his crew reviewed the place a while back and I believe had a favorable experience, I wish I could say the same. They don't take reservations so we put our names on the list and waited at the bar for our 35 minute wait (Expected, it was Saturday night at 7pm). The bartender was great; he supplied the hubby with fresh beer and me with crackers and olives for our wait. Finally about 7:45 we were seated. Our 35 minute wait turned into 45 minutes and here is why. About 10 minutes after we sat at the bar, the owner came over with a group of older men and told the bartender to keep their drinks coming on the house. The arrived after us and were seating about 15 minutes prior to us all the while chatting very loudly at the bar that they knew the owner and wouldn't have to wait with the rest of us. I find that tacky, on to the food...
We placed our orders- 3 of us had baby back ribs, 1 had rib combo which was baby back and beef ribs. 1 smoked chicken, and one vegetarian who ordered a plain quesadilla and Mac and Cheese. Our sides ranged from Mac and Cheese which was hands down a winner, Mashed Potato's another winner, Grilled Veggies DISMAL, Baked Potato DRY DRY DRY and Ranch Style Beans decent. The real disappointment was the beef. I was able to choke down about 3 ribs, the smoke taste was overwhelming, it was like they added liquid smoke by the gallons to the process.
At first I thought it was just me because my taste buds are off due to being pregnant but the hubby thought his chicken was eh, the beef ribs were deemed inedible and the rest of the group were picking at their ribs as well. We didn't go crazy with the Alcohol, I believe 3 beers in total were ordered and the final tab was 142.50. The only salvation to the meal was the complimentary fried donuts that ended the evening, Soft, Warm and Chewy.
I will not go back to Bobby-Q any time soon, there are too many other BBQ joints in the Valley that do things right and won't cost you anywhere near the price. I think my hubby summed up the evening stating "I could have got the same meal at Chili's for a fraction of the cost".
