Review: Al's #1 Chicago Beef in Naperville

Well after a lot of hype (in their ad) and a coupon for a free beef sandwich we gave this new place in Naperville a try. They are at 20 W. Chicago a couple doors down from the Lantern. The decor is modern industrial with lots of posters, e.g. "50c Burgers". Overall nice. We ordered and got our food in a few minutes (they weren't busy). The beef sandwiches were, well beefy. Not in a good way. The beef had an unusual taste that I couldn't identify. The only thing I could think of was old meat. But the place just opened! The fries were made from real potatoes,
were hot and had a good potato flavor, ... BUT... they were soaked with grease. They need to turn up the heat under the fryer. The hot giardinera was typical with a nice heat aftertaste.

All in all we probably won't be back. Too bad. We are still looking for a good Italian beef in the Naperville area. Buono's is off our list. They
used to have the best fries around. Since the remodel their fries are the pits and they only have one size, small. Their fries are now on a par with
McDonald's. Bono's on Ogden West of Yackley has decent sandwiches but they have, hands
down, the worst fries anywhere! I think they change the grease in the fryers once a year whether it needs it or not.

Has anyone tried Old Tavern Pizza on Old Tavern Road off of Ogden for beef sandwiches?
