So I've been watching a bunch of RIs thanks to the miracle of the DVR. The restaurants almost all fall into one of two categories:
1. The restaurants that remind me of the places we used to go as kids (and in one case, a place we actually did go to -- Mainelli's in Providence), both in decor and cuisine. Since my point of reference here is the 1960s and early 1970s, I am never surprised that such places are failing. There must be an endless supply of these time warps around the US.
2. The restaurants bought within the past few years by people who knew nothing about running a restaurant but thought it would be a good idea to go a half-million dollars into debt. Again, no surprise that these places are failing.
I think Ramsay's show features a wider variety of bad restaurants but still, I find Irvine's show weirdly fascinating.
