Went to Spioe & Curry to load up on fresh curry leaves. The store is unispiring but they're getting rid of it to expand the restaurant.
I missed lunch, which was fine as they say they have lines out into the street and I believe it.
So I waited and actually ate at the bizarre hour of 5pm & entirely glad. First, forget about the right side of the menu, the meat dishes and the northern veg. ones. Stick to the left with the Southern specialties.
When I ordered medhu vadai, the waiter said they were out and had dahi vada - lentil dumplings in a yoghurt sauce sprinkled with popped lentils. The dumplings were light the yogurt home-made and pink with chili powder, it was served with home-made ginger pickle, a sweet-hot combination that was superb with the vada.
Next we ordered the Masala Dosa and the Special Rava Masala Dosa, one is a lacy crepe the latter a round rice one. I've had this at Saravana Bhavan aka the famous Dosa Hut in NYC but this was far superior. I asked for it Indian hot and my father swapped as it seemed the Masala dosa was hotter, so I ate it.
The accompanying sambar and coconut chutney were wonderful and again the chutney fresh and homemade.
We were stuffed so finished up with Mysore coffee, sweet (very) and milky. I like it.
Then menu isn't as extensive as Udupi in Cary, the place is tired looking but this was first rate, so too for the service, a little slow but from the hot fried papad's brought to us, worth every minute.
