Tried a few new places for us this week. Here they are:
Pegu Club- If we had not had Mallory as our service person to start, we would have left after one cocktail. The other service person working the floor was very much unfriendly and did not crack a smile the entire time that we were there. Mallory was wonderful with friendly and informative suggestions for cocktails. They allowed us to pick our table with no fuss even though the table that we requested was marked reserved. We tried the Pegu Club Cocktail, Douglas Fir Gimlet, Pisco Punch, Champagne Apricato and the Century 21. The Pisco Punch was very refreshing and fruity without being too fruity. Very good cocktail. The Douglas Fir Gimlet has a very unique taste due to the Douglas Fir liquor used to prepare it. Very relaxing cocktail. Very good cocktail. The Champagne Apricato was very refreshing and light. Good flavor. Good cocktail. The Pegu Club Cocktail is good, but may be an acquired taste for most. Good cocktail. The Century 21 was our least favorite, though not a bad drink. Quite a few flavors competing in this one. Okay cocktail. Cocktails were only $12.00 each except for the champagne drink which was $16.00.
Tia Pol- The owner, bar tender and servers were very friendly and helpful from the moment that we walked through the door. We tried the White Sangria which was very good and light. They put pieces of apple in it to keep it fruity without having bits and pieces of softer fruits floating around in the glass or pitcher. We tried the Patatas Bravas, Bocata De Lomo Adobado, Chorizo Con Chocolate, Suckling Pig, Lamb Meatballs, Gaspacho, and a couple of items from the specials list. The Patatas Bravas was very good. The cheese was soft and completely melted. The seasoning was very pleasant. The Bocata De Lomo Adobado was very good and seasoned nicely. The bread was very fresh and had a great texture. The Chorizo Con Chocolate was very tasty and seasoned well. The spicy chorizo went well with the chocolate. The suckling pig was very tender with a very crispy skin. The lamb meatballs were good. They were seasoned a bit less than we expected after the other dishes. The Gaspacho was very fresh. The gaspacho had a more creamy base than some, but was good if you care for the cream. We enjoyed it. Mark was our service person. He did a great job throughout. The White Sangria went well with all of the dishes that we tried.
Kefi- The service here was terrible, but the food was great. It looked as though our server had nine tables in his section. Very stupid. On to the food. We tried the Crispy Calamari, Grilled Octopus Bean Salad, Sheep's Milk Dumplings with Tomato; Pine Nuts; Spicy Lamb Sausage, and the Pork Souvlaki. The Crispy Calamari was very good. It was not greasy and had a good taste and texture. The sauce that came with it was very good. The grilled octopus on the Grilled Octopus Bean Salad was the most tender octopus that we have ever eaten. The flavor was nice too. The dumplings in the Sheep's Milk Dumplings with Tomato; Pine Nuts; and Spicy Lamb Sausage were incredibly tender. The dish had a very good flavor and texture. The pork Souvlaki also had a good taste and texture. The four mains that we tried were all very good. The desserts that we tried were not very good at all. The Poached Pear with Walnuts, had no pear in it at all. It consisted of a blob of walnut paste with a sauce poured on top. The Flan had the texture of tire rubber and had no taste. The Rice Pudding Ice Cream that accompanied the flan was very good and can be ordered seperately. The Retsina that they serve in the 500 ml bottle is very good for Retsina. It is very fruity with no harsh taste from the resin. The restaurant is across the street from Dublin House.
We would definitely recommend The Pegu Club, with Mallory as your service person, Tia Pol, and Kefi for the food not the service or desserts.
