Spent a glorious day yesterday in Jamestown and Newport. Had lunch at Village Hearth Bakery. First of all, I haven't been in a few years and I can't believe what a big (but still small and cozy) operation the bakery has become - I fell in love with the bakery all over again. The lobster rolls were $15 each, on their own grilled brioche rolls, which might be controversial to some, but we both liked them. There was a small amount of celery (which B liked...I could do without it, but it really was scant) and a bit more mayo than I like, but they were still delicious. We ate outside on the lovely porch, under the beautiful arbor. We also grabbed an everything French loaf and a caprese on ciabatta for a snack afterwards.
Grabbed a couple of bottles of wine and a goat gouda and a horseradish cheddar at Grapes and Gourmet - such a friendly place! Then took the ferry over to Newport, which was great. Ate our snack on a 12-meter America's Cup boat (again, fabulous!).
Ferry back to Jamestown and we settled in for dinner at the pizza bar at Jamestown Fish. I really miss Tricia's TropiGrill, but the outside eating area is still lively and a fun place to be. We shared a fish chowder (pureed, which was ok...I really do think it needed at least a garnish of some chopped up seafood, like local fish or scallops; in my opinion, not worth the $10); the chickpea fritter fries (crispy outside, soft and tender inside); and the broccoli and banana pepper pizza. I've had better pizza - the dough was lacking "soul" to me somehow, though it was constructed right in front of us with care and attention to detail. I prefer a more blistered crust and I think it needed a tad more salt and a longer proofing. But honestly, we over-looked it - it was the perfect end to a perfect Rhody day (plus our company at the bar, two guys who really know their food, was hilarious!).
I noticed the revamped Simpatico across the street was really jamming, too. Maybe it's time to try it again?
