Went to San Antonio over the Labor Day weekend. Asked for some recs for the drive down and the time in SA. Only got one reply and ended up at one of the restaurants suggested, Rosario's. A brief roundup:
Stopped at Schoepf's in Belton on the way down. It was rated as Top 50 in the state by Texas Monthly. Line out the door at 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. Then realized that the line is just created by the inefficient system they have for taking / filling the orders. Brisket dry, ribs dry, sausage run of the mill. Not one of those places where the sauce is optional. The sides: Potato salad, cole slaw, pinto beans, and "cheesy potatoes" were all very good, in fact, the highlight. Cornbread and jalapeno cornbread beyond dry. The staff all were either sitting down eating, or seemed completely disinterested.Tried to order a half chicken but the chickens "weren't ready yet". Then ten minutes later I saw one of the employees eating chicken for her lunch. There were slices of pie in plastic wrap near the register, but nobody knew what kind of pie it was ( and didn't seem to care to find out ). Ugh. I've consistently had better food and experiences at Rudy's.
Saturday night in SA we went to Chris Madrid's for a burger. I had heard about this place from TexasBurgerGuy and elsewhere. Great atmosphere, very good burger. Great fries. I don't think these are the best burgers in the state as some suggest, but they are definitely worth the trip. Also, the atmosphere is unique and interesting. I thought the burgers were about on par with Kinkaid's here in DFW.
Sunday morning we had an obligatory breakfast at Mi Tierra, and you know, it was actually pretty good. We went mainly because I hadn't been in 25 years, and I wasn't expecting much, but we kept it simple and it turned out allright. With eggs,barbacoa, refrieds, tortillas and pico de gallo and a cup of coffee its hard to miss, but they did it right. Picked up some apple empanadas they call "campechanas" on the way out, and they were killer!
Sunday night we had dinner at Rosario's, the one place that was recommended on this board. The food was better than average Tex Mex. The soup with the red chile broth, pozole, pork, and shredded cabbage was very good. The chicken mole enchilada was also very good. Rajas de poblano con crema was not enough rajas, mostly crema. Fajitas and Camarones mojo de ajo were both average. Salsa was freshly roasted and nice and smoky. Prickly pear frozen margaritas were very tasty. Server was pleasant but sloppy and not really on it. I liked this place though, and would recommend it.
