There's been grumblings on these boards that Rendezvous in Del Mar makes some kick ass dumplings and Xiao Long Bao.
Well, one never to overlook a possible oasis of the San Diego Chinese food desert, decided to check out Rendezvous.
Bottom line? It sucks.
Why pay 20% more for essentially P.F. Chang's quality foood?
We knew we were going to get an order of their "steamed dumplings" (aka XLB) and boiled dumplings, so we asked our server for another rec off of their "dim sum" menu. Lo and behold, she recommends the seared tuna! I would've been less surprised if I had asked for sesame balls and been plated Rocky Mountain Oysters, but whatever.
The XLB, in a word, sucked. The skins were mealy, the fillings were like cotton, except maybe cotton would have more taste. And the "dipping sauce" was way too sweet (as was our other entrees we ordered). The boiled dumplings were not memorable, and a complete waste of my calorie quotient for the month of December.
We also tried the steamed fish and the Buddha's Treasure. The former was ruined because the ginger soy sauce was waaay too sweet; the latter was too salty.
And let me say something about the portions. If this is going to be family-style, you have to make the portions bigger. There were only 2 of us, and it was a bit awkward "sharing". And you simply cannot charge me nearly $10 for 6 freaking XLB. That's just stupid.
Before (yes, before) tax and tip our bill was around 60 for 2. I would've been happier wiping my ass with those three $20 bills ...
