Taking relos from LA for a night out - drinks near commons?

Hi there,

My bro/sis-in-law are visiting from LA Thursday and Friday. Unlike hubby and me, I think they prioritise the ambience and atmosphere of a "night out" more than good food. I say that because when we were visiting them, we found this semi-divey Mexican place with great food. They didn't seem impressed mainly because of atmosphere, and didn't seem to even notice the food. On the other hand, they've taken us a few times to up-market chain places with reasonably nice atmosphere and OK food and had a great time. Hubby and me are the other extreme, we love the thrill of finding a dive with great food. *shrug* different strokes.

Well I'd like to be a good host and still have a good time. So I'm thinking this:
* Neptune Oysters at 6pm on Thursday - if there's a long queue, go somewhere nearby for drinks. Otherwise, eat then drinks after.

I'm looking for a place nearby that we could go for drinks. Somewhere both laid-back and still sophisticated. I think I read about Stoddard Ales. Does anyone have other recommendations?

Oh, whilst I'm at it, does anyone know of a bar with a good view of the city skyline?

My alternative is if we go to B&G then have drinks at Pops in the South End after.
