Rehoboth Beach

From my very brief visit to Rehoboth Beach this weekend ...

We wanted seafood but were watching our pennies, so the more upscale restaurants were not on our radar, even though their menus looked great. But, we found a really good place called Big Fish Grille. Not overly trendy but terrific food. Don't be weirded out by the "permanent" menu that is posted in the window (we almost drove away after reading it) -- the place has a split personality and has the staid "blue haired specials" on the permanent menu (consensus is that that menu should GO), but we ordered from the extensive "specials" menu and had a terrific meal at reasonable prices (entrees from $13-$26, I'd estimate). The smoked salmon napolean appetizer was especially good, the soft-shell crabs had the perfect light crust on them, and the side dishes, while homey sounding, are first rate ("Neva's potatoes", especially). Their wine and beer selections are really sad, though....

Despite high hopes, we were very dissappointed by Dogfish Head Brewery (on Rehoboth Ave.). The beer is OUTSTANDING, though. The menu sounded so promising (their brews are featured in almost every aspect of their cooking, according to their hype), BUT -- this place was smokey (not even an attempt at separation between bar and food), had seriously uncomfortable seating (tables so close that, no matter where you wanted to walk, you had to move chairs just to get by), and the food wasn't special AT ALL. We also had the worst service we've had in ages -- when asking about the brews (of the 12ish brews on the chalk board, only 5 or 6 are on their menu - the others are seasonal). Unfortunately, the waitress was seriously put out about having to discuss the others with us, and I have to say that I haven't encountered such an attitude problem in ages (when asked if there was an additional list that described them, she became seriously defensive because she thought that, by orally listing them, she had actually described them). The place was actually more empty that I imagined it would be for a weekend night at the beach, and we should have taken the clue....

I love Rehoboth and would appreciate it if any other Chowhounds would share their current recommendations!!
