My wife and I like to cook Jamaican jerk chicken and curried chicken at home, so the other night I got take out from the Reggae Cafe on Alameda.
The restaurant is located in an ecclectic part of town, so potential visitors should be advised to expect an interesting experience. The restaurant itself is a little dingy, but not dirty.
I ordered takeout (one jerk chicken, one curry chicken) at the counter and the food was ready to go in less than five minutes. In addition to the two entrees I ordered, the menu featured a number of other authentic Jamaican dishes, including meat patties, curried goat, and oxtail stew. There were also a number of interesting looking seafood dishes on the menu.
The food itself was pretty good, and fairly authentic (I'm guessing). The jerk marinate was herby and spicy. You could definitely taste and feel the scotch bonnet peppers. The chicken was super moist and falling off the bone. The curry chicken was similarly moist and the curry sauce was nicely spiced and quite tasty.
Our only complaint with either chicken dish was that the mostly leg and thigh pieces appeared to have been chopped up every which way, which meant pulling a lot of little bone shards out of your mouth while eating it.
Both dishes were accompanied by some innocuous vegetables and the usual Jamaican rice and peas (red beans). I didn't care too much for the rice and peas, but they weren't terrible.
Overall it was fun trying a new place and the food was pretty tasty, but I'm not sure we will go back. If I do go back, I will probably try one of their more exotic dishes (goat or oxtail). If I feel like jerk or curried chicken, I will either make it at home or try one of the handful of other Jamaican restaurants in Houston.
If anyone has been to any of these other establishments, I'd appreciate a heads up. I'm thinking in particular of a Jamaican grocery/counter on Bissonet outside the loop. I can't recall the name.
