we walked into THE RED CAT tonight (saturday) without reservations for dinner and slipped right into bar seats by luck.
the starter wine was argentine malbec and the apps were the veal ragout and THE RED CAT house classic veg side of tempura battered green beans with a sweet/hot mustard dip. the veal ragout was so delicious i almost fell off of the chair. a very rich and flavorful starter. the tempura gb's are a must order and i like'm best like this as an appetizer. if you have not yet had the pleasure they are fun, tasty as they sound and surprisingly not greasy at all.
for dinner we had reisling. i had a perfectly cooked codfish filet on a bed of spinach, okra and shrimp. seems a bit of an odd mix for the fish to rest on but ok i was game. my preference is that the mild codfish be allowed to speak for itself and in the end the bed mix did not interfere so it was fine by me. spouse had a special of rhode island blackfish that came with a side of chanterelle mushrooms and sliced purple potatos. she was the winner by a nose.
for dessert i had an espresso and that was that. wonderful attentive, but not intrusive staff. cost was $110 w/o tip. RED CAT remains as solid as ever. a great choice on a rainy fall weekend evening.
