We live in the Seattle area and just enjoyed dinner at Lark, on Capitol Hill, last week. It was our first time, and we recommend it highly!
The restaurant is in an odd location, between more well trodden (and better-lit) areas of Capitol Hill. We drove past it the first time around and then realized it was the almost invisible storefront in the midst of other nondescript and rather dark little buildings. Anyway, we found it the second time around the block, and when we walked in it was all twinkly candlelight and natural wood and gauzy silver curtains. It had a lovely ambiance.
The menu was basically five or six lists of different kinds of food, such as cheeses, veggies, sausages and potted foods, fish, and meat. The prices on each item, all intended to be small and shared family style, were from about $6 to $16. Our waiter gave us the hint that the items at the top of each list were about 3 ounces and as you go toward the bottom of the list the items got bigger, to about 6-9 oz. Every item on the menu was unusual but very approachable, and it was clear that they love their fresh ingredients. The specials were a bison dish with black truffles and a sardine dish with chorizo. We ended up choosing both and, with the exception of those darn sardine bones, we were delighted with our choices. We also selected a chicken liver parfait that could have been an appetizer for four; it was so rich. The veggie we selected was sautéed hedgehog mushrooms very yummy and buttery with a firm, meaty texture.
Note that the place can be very noisy, especially at the side of the restaurant that is a long row of two-tops. The booths were much quieter, but there are only a handful of them. The place is small. The bar is only four chairs long, but is in a good location for quiet and for a great view of the kitchen.
They only take reservations for parties of 6 or more. Get there early. Go on a weekday.
The food was fabulous and surprisingly hearty. The ambiance was lovely and fun. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and appropriately friendly. No one tried to be our new best friend, they just took good care of us and made sure we were satisfied with our experience. The owners have impeccable food pedigrees, and should not be overlooked as a source for your next delicious dinner date.
