Has anyone noticed that with all the great Mexican restuarants and taquerias in LA that it is extremely difficult to find a place which serves truly traditional Mexican/Aztec/South American chocolate?
What I'm seeking is an operation that grinds their own cacao nibs and even their drinks without sugar... I'm very curious to taste the "original" flavor of chocolate (even searches on the internet for traditional recipes never seem to turn up exactly what I'm looking for). As an alternative, I'd love to hear suggestions or recipes from people who have made this at home.
The only options I've ever seen are at restaurants which have instant Mexican chocolate powder (like the kind they sell at Trader Joe's) but this is very sweet and hardly spicy (and despite the Aztec artwork on the can, I suspect not very authentic!)
